5 Capybara Facts

Capybaras hold the title of the largest living rodent, with some adults weighing up to 150 pounds and reaching over four feet in length.

With partially webbed feet and eyes, nostrils, and ears located high on their heads, they are perfectly adapted for life in and around water. They can swim underwater for up to five minutes to escape danger.

Capybaras are known for their calm and social nature, and smaller animals like birds, turtles, and even cats will often rest on their backs, leading to them being called “moving chairs” or “nature’s sofas”.

Like other rodents, a capybara’s teeth grow continuously throughout their life. This is an adaptation to wear down their molars, which are constantly used to grind tough plant material.

Capybaras are herbivores that eat plants, but they also eat their own droppings to extract all available nutrients. This is a common practice among many herbivores.
